Four Grade 7 learners from Victoria Primary School, thrilled at having secured victory in the 2nd round of the Astro Quiz at Science Expo, already are preparing a new strategy for the next round when they will face last year's winners Graeme College.

The Astro Quiz is an annual event held by Scifest Africa to promote science and astronomy. In the first round, 96 schools from the district participated. VP and Graeme were among 20 schools that made the third stage in the competition last Friday 1 August.

The learners say that they feel very proud of themselves.

"We worked very hard," Emma Koch said. "Even so individually preparing for the quiz it wasn't easy but we've made it thus far. In this next stage we will get together more often and prepare as a group rather than prepare individually. Then we will be able to assist each other."

VP Teacher Vernon Jones said the girls were given a booklet which consists of the latest developments in astronomy. "They had to study it through and were assessed based on that."

The third stage of the competition is to be held in Grahamstown on Friday 29 August 2014. Twelve of the schools will be eliminated and the remaining teams will go to the final round.

The Victoria primary team winners are Koch, Minentle Gadu, Zoe Lang and Emmalie Morgan.
