Around 20 matric pupils from Grahamstown schools have already got off the starting blocks and are speeding towards matric wins with maths and science revision. And they've got enthusiastic Rhodes students backing them up under the guidance of Dr Lizanne Raubenheimer.

The Khanya Maths and Science Club offers comprehensive revision sessions on maths, accounting, physics and chemistry to any interested Grahamstown matriculant.

Their intention is to complement the matric syllabus and to prepare the learners for the upcoming national exams.

No programmes regarding revision of school work or winter schools have been available to the Grahamstown learners this year.

“Because of the lack of assistance we decided we need to do a formal thing and work with Grade 12 pupils,” Joyce Sewry of the Rhodes Chemistry Department said, adding, “The need was also expressed by the learners.”

With the help of Dr Setshaba Khanye, also of the Rhodes Chemistry Department, these revision sessions were made possible.

Raubenheimer leads the mathematics revision sessions, which are energetic and engaging. She won the Vice Chancellor’s Teaching Award in 2012. Khanye leads the Chemistry revision.

Rhodes' under- and post-graduate students volunteer as tutors to work more closely with the matric learners.

The club is free and open to all Grade 12 learners of both public and private schools.

There is no limited space, as “the bigger the numbers, the better”, Khanye said.

These sessions take place every Saturday from 9am to 12.30pm and will continue until the end of September.
