The Department of Social Development and Special Programmes in Grahamstown held a career counselling session on Wednesday 6 August at Nathaniel Nyaluza High School.

This is a series of sessions which began at the beginning of July.

Calvin Dilayi, a social worker who ran the programme, said their aim is to encourage learners to take their studies seriously and to expose them to as many career options as possible.

“The programme generally focuses on issues such as career exploration and career development of the learners through motivating them to make the right decisions while they are still young," Dilayi told Grocott's Mail.

Two other schools, Nombulelo High School and Mrwetyana Secondary School, have attended the programme.

The session at Nyaluza was attended by 31 learners who asked questions about different career possibilities.

Learners Ncanywa Sinovuyo (17) and Asisipho Fulani (19) said they found the talk to be motivational and useful as it offered them with guidelines on how to choose the right career paths.

“I did not believe that I could go to university, but through the information I got from the career counselling session I now have hope,” Asisipho said.

Nyaluza High School Headmaster Zakunzima Tyala said they are grateful that their learners got to benefit from the programme as it will widen their scope when it comes to their careers.

“We have had motivational talks presented by the South African National Defence Force before, but this is different because it prepares the learners on how to apply for university entrance,” Tyala said.
