TEM Mrwetyana Secondary School continues to struggles with leaking sewage after almost five months. Before you reach the school's gate, you are overwhelmed by the unpleasant smell from the blocked drain.

The sludge moves from the drain into the school yard, where there are classes and flows directly in front of the kitchen used to cook the pupil's meals.

According to the Head of Department (Human Science) at the school, Landile Sandi, the blockage started early February and the school reported the matter to the municipality.

"The municipality sent people to fix the problem, but it blocked up again," said Sandi.

Sandi said developers from the Public Works Department once came to the school to look at the situation.

"At the time they said they could not work on the blockage as this would disturb the learning process since noisy machines would have to be used," said Sandi.

Grade 11 pupil, Kanyisa Ngwemtu, said, "We cannot focus when we are in class because of the smell; it make one lose concentration."

Sandi said the school is still waiting for the municipality to fix the matter but it is not clear when this will be done.

School Principal, Lindelo Ramokolo, was not available for comment at the time Grocott’s Mail visited the school.
