The bush fire, which Stones Hill residents thought was contained, has flared up again.

The fire is moving up from Belmont Valley towards the Mills’ property and around their farmhouse. The wind has picked up, reviving the fire and it is now blowing thick smoke and cinders across the Port Alfred road towards the upper areas of the Mills’ farm and the Haggard’s property.

A traffic official is on site cautioning motorists travelling along the R67 from Grahamstown to drive carefully, with their lights on, as visibility is a problem.

The fire started last week Thursday morning, 17 July. Fire and Rescue Services and residents of Stones Hill and volunteers worked all weekend to extinguish the fire.

By Monday the fire was relatively under control and contained in the Belmont Valley, but since then, the strong wind has fanned the fire cause it to blaze once again.

Fire and Rescue Services, volunteers from Stones Hill, Grahamstown and as far afield as Hogsback are currently working together with Basil Mills and his wife and son to put the fire out.
