Speaking to Grocott's Mail this morning, Basil Mills confirmed that the fire situation in Stones Hill has been stabilised.

"We've managed to contain the fire," he said, "it's still simmering down in the valley in some areas which are impossible to get to."

Mills explained that although the worst is over, there is a chance of small pockets of flames creeping up to the fire-breaks in front of his property. He is not too worried as he feels prepared and the fire will be easier to extinguish from this position.

Stones Hill residents are left to pick up the pieces after a tiresome weekend of battling the elements.

The Wille family's Bed and Breakfast, A Stone’s Throw, was hit hard as the fire claimed their property. The Ginn family have suffered a terrible loss. Leslie Ginn’s house, that she built up by herself only 4 years ago, was burnt to a cinder. The fire melted the water pipes to her family’s house, close by, leaving them to helplessly watch as the house burned down.

The Thorburn's also lost their house and motorcycle collection to the fire over the weekend.

"It's been a long battle," Mills said, "we're dealing with the last pockets now but the situation has been stabilised."
