The Makana Department of Sport says it is time for old folks to start working their bodies and stop lazing around and watching the sun all day long. Department staff members were at the Ethembeni old age home in Joza doing their bit in celebrating the 67 minutes of Madiba.

Chief sport organiser Maswana Msondezi says there is nothing more glorious than making old people smile.

“In our culture as black people we have this belief that caring for the elderly brings blessings, so we are here doing our part by bringing smiles to the elders and teaching them about the importance of taking care of their bodies through sports”, said Msondezi.

“We chose to spend this day with the elderly as we feel they are neglected most of the times, we want to use this day to make them feel special as well”, he added.

The department used the 67 minute occasion to teach the Joza elderly residents about the reading and exercise activities while also giving out cake and coffee to enjoy event.

They were joined in the festivities by the Publics Works Extended Program (EPWP) which helped with cleaning the dishes and planned to cut the grass in the home later on while St Andrews College provided soup and rolls.

Ethembeni supervisor Nokhaya Grace Ngcete was delighted by the efforts to help the elderly saying it had been a long time since the people of the area had been shown such love.

“This is a special place for them, this is where they relax and socialise, it good that we can be able to put smiles in their faces”, said Ngcete.

The Department of Sport promised to return to the home to provide sport equipment for the old people to keep their bodies in shape.
