This strike was meant to continue until the strikers’ demands were met, but this seems to be not the case as the striking municipal workers were seen wearing their working gear and cleaning the streets on 16 July 2014.
Zola Kolisi, the Chairperson of Makana’s South African Municipal Workers' Union (Samwu) branch told Grocott’s Mail that they decided to go back to work due to the fact that they did not want to compromise their jobs. This is based on the letter which the union was given by Makana Municipality’s lawyers, stating that the striking workers must go back to work or face dismissal.
Samwu and its members decided to end the strike, but will continue with their fight from inside without compromising their well-being or the well-being of their families, said Kolisi.
