The industrial action, which began on 3 July, the first day of the National Arts Festival, was declared illegal this week. Police delivered a court interdict to union leaders in Church Square yesterday morning, advising them to disband the strike and obtain legal advice.
Samwu Grahamstown chairperson Zola Kolisi and secretary Lindelwa Faltein today told the strikers they hadn't been able to meet with Samwu's lawyers, because one of them was on leave.
South African Police Service officers stood by vehicles parked in front of the Frontier Country Hotel as a police helicopter hovered above.
A notice issued to the strikers announced a meeting in the city hall on Monday 14 July.
