Members of the South African Municipal Workers Union in Grahamstown have vowed to continue a strike which began on Thursday 3 July, at the start of the National Arts Festival.

From the handful who gathered yesterday, more than 100 strikers met in Church Square this morning to hear the outcome of a meeting yesterday afternoon between local and regional Samwu leadership and the municipality's management.

Union leaders told them the strike had been declared unlawful by the court and that it should not continue. They explained that this was because their march application form stated they were going to be on strike for one day only.

If the strike ended today, the workers could apply for another strike on 8 August, the workers were told.

The Samwu members resolved to continue the strike until their demands were met.

Across the city yesterday, rubbish lay strewn across verges. In the informal settlement of Nandi, residents were forced to use the flush toilets of residents in neighbouring Phumlani, as bucket toilets at their homes overflowed.
