Grahamstown to Sea inaugural men's race winner, Jason Meaton, has confirmed his entry in the 2014 edition of the 58km mountain bike event.

The mountain bike race from Grahamstown to Port Alfred takes place on the last day of the National Arts Festival, Sunday 13 July.

A former Grahamstonian, Meaton says he enjoys returning to his home, especially if he can include a cycle ride.

Meaton is currently ranked 18th in the elite section of cross-country mountain biking in South Africa.

This rank sees him qualify for the UCI Mountain Bike Marathon World Championships, taking place in Pietermaritzburg this weekend.

Meaton, who said the G2C route is “challenging in its own way,” said last year’s was a well organised event and worth coming back to each year. Meaton said he hopes to defend his title on Sunday 13 July.

Mountain bikers across the province and many in Grahamstown have been preparing for the second annual Pennypinchers G2C ride.

Organised by Grahamstown-based Saints & Sinners Cycling Club, and sponsored by Pennypinchers (Grahamstown and Port Alfred), this year’s event has already attracted over 230 entries.

The inaugural G2C ride last year drew in excess of 300 entries from all over the Eastern Cape.

G2C spokesperson John van Onselen said organisers had again fixed the starting time at 8.30am to give visiting riders from East London and Port Elizabeth sufficient time to get to Grahamstown.

The starting point for G2C will be the Pennypinchers warehouse in the industrial area, with the finish at Rosehill Mall outside Port Alfred.
