Brumbies’ centre, Duane Brown, scored 21 points as his side turned around a 17-29 deficit to beat African Bombers (based in Port Elizabeth) 31-29.

The game, an Eastern Province Super League, Grand Challenge fixture, was played at the Oval. Brown, who was named Man of the Match, scored two tries, four conversions and a penalty.

Bombers slotted a penalty in the second minute to take an early lead. Brumbies hit back with a try by Brown. Bombers scored to regain an 8-7 lead.

Brown scored his second try as Brumbies took a 14-8 lead. Bombers scored two converted tries towards the end of the first half, as they led 22-17 at the break.

Bombers were first to score in the second half to extend their lead to 29-17. Brumbies’ captain Gareth Burger bulldozed his way through Bombers defenders to score and give his side a glimmer of hope as they trailed 24-29, with 15 minutes left on the clock.

A constructive line-out maul, won by Brumbies, saw them drive the visitors back as Jason Potgieter scored a diving try. Brown converted for Brumbies to take the lead 31-29, with five minutes remaining.

Bombers attacked for the line, but good defence kept them from scoring as Brumbies took the win. Brumbies 1st reserves beat Bombers 39-5.

Try scorers were Dimitri Stuurman, Bucs Stuurman, Royden Isaacs, Gershwon Max and Octavian Frans, while Steve Abrahams converted three tries and two penalties, Mario O’Brien converted one try.
