Two police officers who were visiting nearby polling stations and members of the Grahamstown K9 unit responded "within minutes" to a robbery which took place at approximately 5.30pm on Tuesday 6 May, said a South African Police Service (SAPS) press release.

By the time they arrived on the scene a man, who had allegedly broken into a house and robbed a woman occupant of her handbag and wallet, had been apprehended by three members of the public.

The three friends had gone to pick up a vehicle at the Volkswagen motor dealership when they heard the screams of a young woman.

Shortly after, they saw two men running from Bertram Street into High Street.

The three citizens gave chase; one of them also contacted the police.

With the exception of cash and a bankcard, all property was returned to the woman.

The suspect will appear in the Grahamstown Magistrate’s Court shortly, on charges of housebreaking and robbery.
A second suspect is being sought by police.

The 20-year-old victim was alone in her flat when two men broke in by displacing a sliding door. When she interrupted them, they pushed the sliding door on to her and fled with her belongings.

She sustained slight injuries to her foot, said a SAPS press release.
