A 28-year-old Port Elizabeth man arrested in connection with the 2012 murder of a 24-year-old Rhodes University student Lelona Fufu pleaded not guilty to murder charges this week.

The university community was rocked by the death of the BSc student from Motherwell township in Port Elizabeth, who was found dead with stab wounds, near Coega, in April 2012. She was due to receive her honours degree in mathematics and mathematical statistics later that day.

She was last seen that day around 2pm, when she left her home in Motherwell, Port Elizabeth, to hitchhike to Grahamstown, where she was to prepare for the Thursday evening graduation ceremony.

Police had confirmed that Fufu’s body was found near the old Coega Hotel on Friday morning with major stab wounds. It was presumed she died of those injuries.

Mxolisi Kitsana, of Motherwell, was charged with kidnapping, robbery with aggravating circumstances and the murder of Fufu.
