    Letter: Residents’ rubbish attitudes

The public needs to hold Makana Council accountable at all times for the shocking lack of services – and not just water issues, but sewage, refuse removal, roads, and power too.

Frankly, the public should openly question Makana when things are not being done as they should be.

For example, last Thursday 10 April was the first time in three weeks that household refuse was collected.

But, sadly, many homeowners did not respond in a responsible way to this problem.

Instead, they allowed the people who work for them to take a wheelbarrow with their household refuse to the various garden refuse dump sites in town.

This is illegal and poses a health risk.

Two of these garden refuse dump sites – the one at the end of Kowie Street and the one opposite Graeme College gates – do not have bins any longer and should not be used even for garden refuse at all.

But residents continue to dump both garden and household refuse in these sites.

Everyone in Grahamstown can help to start cleaning up our city by doing three simple things:

    i. When garbage is not collected, simply keep it inside or transport it to the main Makana garbage tip (and not to garden refuse bins)
    ii. Mow your own verges
iii. Report anything that is out of line to the Makana Municipality – work not being done, new leaks, potholes, etc.
