An elderly Extension 9 woman who was trying to protect her family finally succumbed to injuries she sustained after being attacked in her home along with with her granddaughter last week.

Police are investigating a case of rape and attempted murder following the brutal attack on the two women aged 61 and 21 after armed men gained entry through a window and attacked them on Saturday 6 April.

Both were admitted to hospital the following day, however, the 61-year-old died in hospital.

Shortly after the incident police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said both the victims were asleep when they were woken up and attacked by unknown men, who entered through a window.

Govender said both were beaten with an iron rod and stabbed. "The elder victim who attempted to fight back sustained stab wounds and a broken arm while the younger victim suffered several injuries to her upper body," she said.

When Grocott's Mail arrived in Extension 9 that Sunday, the community had called a meeting on a field in the area to discuss ways of dealing with crime in the area, as a result of the shocking incident.

Shortly after the news of the passing of the 62-year-old woman community members called another meeting.

A senior police officer who was at the meeting urged residents to allow the law to take its course and not take the law into their own hands.

Govender said specialist investigators had been at the scene on Sunday as well as during the course of Monday 7 April.

Govender said no arrests have been made.
