This week, Up For Debate takes note of the fact that the  2014 National Arts Festival is fast approaching and asks some pertinent questions of the value of arts and culture for the Grahamstown community.

We consider: for ten days, Grahamstown will again be hosting the biggest celebration of the Arts on the African continent. But what happens in our artistic community on the other 355 days of the year, and does this help to make Makana a 'great place to be'?

To help us answer these questions, we invited to our studio some people who are making special contributions to the Arts in our town: ex-manager of Monastery, Daniel Long; Fingo Festival’s director Xolile Madinda and Drama Master’s student and Ubom! performer, Phumelela Nqelenga.
