When Grocott's Mail arrived at the scene just after 2pm, the body was covered with a blanket on the pavement.
There was one Grahamstown police station vehicle and a Netcare 911 ambulance at the scene.
Grahamstown police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said the police had opened an inquest docket.
