Govender's illustrious career started way back in 1981 when he joined the force as a student constable, gradually making his way up the police ranks.
He spent a considerable amount of time in different parts of the country, particularly in Durban, before eventually joining the Grahamstown police in 2001.
In the past Govender has been called to act in the position during Moyake's absence.
Speaking to Grocott's Mail yesterday he said the new job broadens his focus to more than just the one station he has been managing.
"I want to ensure the safety of the community and ensure that the police provide good service to the community," he said.
Govender also called on the community to work with the police in their attempt to rid communities of crime.
As cluster commander, Govender will oversee the running of eight police stations.
He was appointed as cluster commander on 20 March.
