Rhodes students studying isiXhosa will be involved in the Eastern Cape government’s translation programme from June, reports Babalwa Resha for Grocott's Mail.
The language unit of the Eastern Cape Legislature has asked the isiXhosa Department at Rhodes University, Grahamstown, to participate in its translation programme.
Eastern Cape Legislature spokesperson, Mthetheleli Mangcunyana, said the programme was a new initiative to help ordinary people access parliamentary debates in their home language.
Rhodes isiXhosa mother-tongue students have been asked to transcribe the Eastern Cape legislature’s house debates.
Mangcunyana said the students will be given summaries of Bills to translate, in preparation for public hearings in the legislature.
Fifty Rhodes students will take part in the programme.
Senior lecturer at the Rhodes University School of Languages, Pamela Maseko, said the project provided students with invaluable experience which could help them in their future careers.
