Kingswood College got their early rugby season off to a great start to beat Humansdorp Secondary School 43-5, while St Andrew’s College went down 8-30 to Daniel Pienaar.

Kingswood played the curtain-raiser of the Kirkwood Rugby Day.

Although Kingswood was missing four key players, Humansdorp’s pack was no match for the Kingswood pack as they won virtually all the scrums on the day.

With such a surplus of good ball, Kingswood’s backs were given ample chances to run at their opposition. Flyhalf Josh Shelley's decision-making and distribution was good.

Michael Braans and Alon Dawe complimented each other well at centre and Cameron Hertz and Ezra Mager wreaked havoc towards the touch lines.

The try of the match belonged to Alex Trow, who finished off a wave of attack. This started deep inside the Kingswood 22m, when Mager beat his opposite man with a surge of pace and set off upfield. Passing before contact, the ball went through several hands before Trow finished the move under the uprights. Other tries were scored by Braans, Hertz, Freddie Burchell and Devon Barnard (two).

Hertz kicked over five conversions and a penalty. Kingswood coach, Gareth Shaw, was happy with the season opener ahead of their match against Queens at Graeme Rugby Day on Friday: “We really needed this match. The players have been itching to get out and play.”

The St Andrew’s/Daniel Pienaar match started at a furious pace with both teams creating opportunities.

Daniel Pienaar were the first to score after a penalty kick. St Andrew’s replied moments later as Robbie Ball sliced through the defence to allow scrum-half Camran Macfarlane to score the opening try for St Andrew’s and give them the early lead.

Daniel Pienaar’s scored their opening try late in the half to give them an 11-5 lead into half-time.

Although St Andrew’s managed to maintain field position in the second half, they could not convert this dominance into points.

Daniel Pienaar continued to capitalise on the St Andrew’s errors scoring two break-away tries and a charge-down to run out eventual winners at 30-8.
