There were excited cheers as the 17th, annual Franz Erasmus netball tournament commenced at P.J.Olivier high school this past weekend.

Under-13 netball coach, Hendrien Coetzee, said that the tournament's goal was to allow students to bond with one another, and to grow to love the sport.

She said players from opposing schools were allowed to trade players if the scores were unequal.

“They [students]get the opportunity to play at different levels” said Coetzee.

The first Franz Erasmus tournament, which hosted only six local schools, has now grown to include 23 schools located all over the Eastern Cape, including shools from Jeffery’s Bay, Graaff Reinet and Port Alfred.

“Student enjoys participating every year as they become familiar with one another; there is great camaraderie among participants” said Coetzee.

Overall, spirits were high and participants enjoyed a fun-filled, energised weekend.
