Organisers of the fifth annual Makana Green Fun Run this Sunday, 16 March are expecting a thousand-plus participants.

All entrants will receive a spekboom baton, together with planting instructions.

The fund-raiser event is organised by the Rhodes University Environmental Committee and all funds raised by the event, either through entries or donations, are used to support the Rhodes University Green Fund which aims to reduce the university’s carbon footprint.

Last year’s event attracted 800 participants.

“We’re expecting about 1 000 or more this year,” event organiser, Nikki Kohly, said.

“We’re excited that there’s been a lot more interest shown this year, and more involvement from businesses.”

Grahamstown residents are invited to be a part of this event by running the 6.4km race, walking the 2.3km race, or by volunteering as an organiser or marshal.

The route starts and ends at Drostdy Arch on the corner of Somerset Street and High Street and the water point is on Fitzroy Street.

Entrants are advised to stay on the pavement where possible and be aware of traffic.

Drivers are asked to please be aware of all participants of the race on Sunday from 4.30pm onwards.

Various environmental prizes will be awarded to first, second and third to cross the finish line; best team; best individual outfit representing sustainability; the business that provides the most support to school pupils; and biggest residence and school team to participate.

Organisations and businesses are encouraged to set up stands selling sustainable products, food and drinks.

Kohly said runners and walkers could still enter on the day from 3pm to 4pm.

The event begins at 4.30pm at the Drostdy Arch and lawns.
