A group of friends from Rhodes University are auditioning for Idols because it is on their bucket list. They will join the thousands auditioning to become the next South Africa Idol.
Vanessa Chivere, Sikhona Nyamende and Michaela Baker are driving down to the friendly city to audition for the tenth season of Idols.
"I've been watching Idols since I was in primary school and now that I'm old enough, I'm finally doing it," said Nyamende.
The MNet team is bringing Idols to Port Elizabeth this year after Algoa FM lobbied for the Idols auditions to be held in PE.
The auditions will take place at The Boardwalk Amphitheatre on Thursday, March 13 from 9am.
The first round of auditions will be judged by Algoa FM presenter, Charl Leslie, managing director of Radio Active Production Publishing, Bronwen Nel, and director of Two Tone Music, Gareth Williams.
The judges will select 70 contestants who will go to the second round of auditions that will take place at The Boardwalk International Convention Centre on Friday March 14.
In the second round of auditions three talented contestants will be selected by Idols voice coach, Malie Kelly, Idols producer Anneke De-Rideer, Algoa FM presenter, Charlton Tobias, and Lani Lombard, the head of special projects and publicity.
These contestants will receive their golden tickets and make their way to Johannesburg.
"I don't see myself actually getting a ticket but by some random chance I happen to get it I'd ask it to be carried over to the next year after I've finished my honours," said Chivere.
The friends will leave Grahamstown at 5am on Thursday morning so they are in time for registration which takes place at 7.
"We're so keen for the audition. People make bucket lists everyday but they often never get the chance to go through them, so Idols being in PE is just the perfect opportunity for us," said Baker.
"I don't even want a golden ticket or anything like that, I'm doing this so I can scratch something off my list," she said.
The Rhodes students will ask to be in the audition room together for moral support, but they will each sing a different song.
Idols auditions have already been held in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town.
PE and Pretoria auditions were still to be held.
Nyamende was off ill at the time the photographs were taken.
