The fifth annual Makana Green Fun Run takes place on Sunday 16 March 2014 at 4:30pm at the Drostdy Arch and lawns.

The fund-raiser event is organised by the Rhodes University Environmental Committee (RUEC) and aims to raise awareness regarding environmental sustainability.

Last year’s event attracted 800 participants. “We’re expecting about 1000 or more this year,” event organiser, Nikki Kohly, said.

“We’re excited that there’s been a lot more interest shown this year, and more involvement from businesses,” she said.

All funds raised by the event, either through entries or donations, are used to support the Rhodes University Green Fund (RUGF) which aims to reduce the university’s carbon footprint. RUGF’s mission is to "stimulate learning and practice in environmental sustainability" so as to make Rhodes University and Grahamstown models of sustainability.

Two examples of how the RUGF uses its funding are through an electricity-saving project, primarily in residences, and worm farming.

Early entries for the event can be bought for a minimum donation of R10 on specific days from the Monument, Health Suite or Alumni House until 14 March 2014. Tickets can be bought on the day from 3pm to 4pm.

On completion of the race all entrants will receive a Spekboom baton, together with planting instructions.

Various environmental prizes will be awarded to first, second and third to cross the finish line; best team; best individual outfit representing sustainability; the business that provides the most support to scholars; and biggest residence and school team to participate.

All Grahamstown citizens are invited to be a part of this event by running the 6.4km race, walking the 2.3km race, or by volunteering as an organiser or marshal.

Organisations and businesses are encouraged to set up stands selling sustainable products, food and drinks.
