Police continue to search for the family of a week-old baby girl who last Sunday was stuffed in a shopping bag and dumped near a top local girl's school.
The crying infant was heard by two girls from the Diocesan School for Girls (DSG) and taken to Settler's Hospital where she was placed under the care of nurses.
Provincial health department senior communications manager Siyanda Manana told Grocott's Mail yesterday that the infant was in a stable condition.
"The baby is now rehydrated and she is in a stable condition," he said Manana said the case was being handled by a social worker who would ensure that the baby was placed in a safe home.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Luvuyo Mjekula confirmed that at about 2pm on Sunday 9 February, a baby girl estimated to be five days old was found near the College of the Transfiguration by two DSG pupils.
Mjekula said the two DSG pupils stopped a passing car which was being driven by an off-duty police officer. After being alerted to the baby the officer took the infant to a social worker at Settlers Hospital.
He said the baby was clean, healthy-looking and unharmed when it was found.
"Police are working round the clock to try and locate the mother of the baby," Mjekula said.
Grahamstown police are investigating a case of child abandonment. Police urged anyone with information that could lead to the location of the baby’s family to contact the investigating officer, Constable Unathi Bilitane, on 071 352 4450.
