The 20th edition of the Pepper Grove Pick n Pay Inter Company Night Bowls league got under-way this week, with much excitement.

Many teams are fielded as a team building exercise, with many participants playing the game for the first time.

The main aim of the tournament is always to have as much fun as possible, which many teams do. However, there are the few very serious teams who are there to win.

Hosted by the Grahamstown Bowling Club, committee members were on-hand throughout each evening offering assistance and seeing to various queries during play.

This week teams were split into three sections, playing on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

For the next four week's games will be played on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.

The sixth week will see section and plate winners play-offs, with the finals scheduled for Friday 7 March.

This week's games saw Pick n Pay staff bowling the 'first wood' on each of the three evenings.

Karel Zimmerman opened Monday's bowls evening, Charles Opperman on Tuesday and Ross Shelton sent down the first wood on Wednesday.

Last year's winners, Stan's Transport were under the floodlights on Wednesday evening. However, they did not have a winning start, losing to East Cape Electrical 11-7.

The action continues next week Tuesday and Wednesday, with games starting at 6.30pm.

Refreshments are on sale throughout the evening.

If a team thinks they missed the boat in taking part in this year's event, night bowls committee member Phil McDougall said there are still a few spots left as late entries. To snatch up one of the late entries, contact Phil on 046 622 9411.
