A 38-year-old man was arrested early this morning following the fatal stabbing of his 32-year-old wife at Ethembeni Location in Grahamstown in the early hours of Sunday 26 January.
Police said a witness told them he was awoken by a knock on the door by the victim's daughter. She told him her parents were fighting.
Soon after, her mother arrived with her other four children and asked for a place to sleep.
The suspect arrived and asked his wife for matches, Grahamstown police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said in a statement. When she didn't give him any, an argument ensued.
Govender said the man then took out a knife and stabbed her in her upper body before fleeing. The woman died at the scene.
The couple's five children, aged between two and 13 years, have been severely traumatised, Govender said. A relative is caring for them and trauma counselling has been arranged for them.
Govender said the suspect faces a charge of murder and will appear in the Grahamstown Magistrate's court soon.
