A young dancer died in hospital this week after being stabbed during a fight.

Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender confirmed on Thursday 23 January that Thozamile 'Rocky' Mngcongo had been murdered.

Mngcongo was a well-known dancer in Grahamstown, frequently appearing in productions in and around the city.

He was the lead dancer of the award-winning group Amaphiko Dance Project.

They appeared on the popular reality television show Step Up or Step Down which aired on eTV last year.

Andrew Buckland, who worked closely with Amaphiko over the years, tweeted "just lost a friend and extraordinarily gifted artist… ain't nobody could dance like that man".

The police said an argument between Mngcongo and another man allegedly started over a woman, resulting in the stabbing.

Speaking to Grocott's Mail Captain Mali Govender said the incident took place on Albert Road near the Chan Henry store on Wednesday 22 January.

Govender said a case of murder is under investigation, adding that a 22-year-old man had been taken into police custody. He appeared in court yesterday.
