An influential American travel list named a Grahamstown game reserve in its ‘Best of the Best Places to Visit’ this year.

Kwandwe Private Game Reserve has been selected by The Daily Beast, a popular news and opinion website affiliated to Newsweek, as tops in their category for ‘Best Wildlife Experience’ in their list of ‘Best of the Best Places to Visit’ in 2014.

The list was compiled by a team at the luxury travel company Andrew Harper.

General Manager Graeme Mann says that Kwandwe was "delighted" with the news, adding that “Kwandwe Private Game Reserve has always put the wildlife experience at the forefront, contributing to making the Eastern Cape truly wild to provide a world-class safari experience."

The reserve boasts the Big Five as well as a remarkable variety of predators and general game, including cheetah, kudu, springbok, eland, red hartebeest, giraffe, black wildebeest and gemsbok.

Kwandwe’s main conservation aim is to maintain a sustainable high yield/ low impact conservation model.

Kwande is built on 22,000ha of rehabilitated wilderness on either side of the Great Fish River and comprises only four small luxury safari lodges, according it one of the highest acre to guest ratios in South Africa.

“The successful development of this conservation model has been key in providing our guestsa top wildlife experience,” added Graeme.

Through its newly launched Blue Crane Conservation Club (Kwandwe means ‘Place of the Blue Crane’ in isiXhosa), an eco theme and a number of new activities have been introduced to its existing children’s programme.

Guests can also participate in Kwandwe’s voluntourism activities through the reserve’s Angus Gillis Foundation, which works with communities living on and surrounding the reserve.

Kwandwe offers a wide range of activities, including daily game drives, night drives and nature walks, boat rides, fishing and additional safari activities such as Big Game Walking Safaris, Rhino Monitoring Safaris and Rhino Conservation Safaris where guests have the opportunity of participating in Kwandwe’s exciting rhino-darting and notching programme under the supervision of experts.
