“The St Andrew’s College community warmly congratulates the 2013 Matric class on their outstanding results… we are very proud of the boys on producing a 97% university pass rate,” said St Andrew’s College Headmaster, Paul Edey.

“We thank the teachers at both St Andrew’s College and our sister school, the DSG, for their dedication and effort in producing these superb results. Almost without exception the boys produced results which improved on their previous best, while, once again, the top boys showed that you can be fully involved in every sphere of school life and still produce results of the highest calibre.”

The 75 DSG girls achieved a 100% pass rate and 96% of the candidates gained matric with entry to Bachelor Degree studies. The IEB average for Bachelor Degree passes is 85%.

The girls achieved 194 subject distinctions and 189 above 70% for individual subjects.

That means that 66.7% of the subject results were either an A or a B.

Placed in the top 1% of all the candidates nationally who wrote these subjects were DSG pupils Zola Yaka and Lisa Woker in Business Studies; Jemma Houghton in Dance; Silvie van Onselen in both Design and Visual Arts and  Lucy Stratton, Kate Whitehead and Jennifer Wood in Life Sciences.

“These results are a reflection of the commitment and hard work of the Matrics of 2013

and the dedication of their teachers. I am delighted at what they have achieved…,” said Shelley Frayne, DSG Headmistress.

Kingswood  College Head Jon Trafford was thrilled with the school's 100% pass rate and the 117 distinctions achieved by the matric class of 2013. Nineteen of these were for mathematics.

"This year's results underscore the hard work and commitment of our 2013 matriculants. We are absolutely delighted with the achievements of our top academics, but also the overall matric examination performance and the number of top grades achieved, across a range of subjects, by our pupils,” Trafford said.

“I would also like to pay tribute to the teaching staff who laid the foundation for these successes. Another year where we scored a 100 % is testimony to the hard work and professionalism of the staff."

Countrywide, 9 580 full-time and 586 part-time candidates countrywide wrote the IEB National Senior Certificate examinations in November 2013.

Of these, the Eastern Cape had 12 513 candidates.

This year 621 more candidates wrote the IEB examination, compared  to 2012, according to the Board.

“This increase came from four new institutions that have joined the IEB as well as from increases in learner numbers at existing schools,” the Board said in a media release.

The 2013 pass rate is 98.56%, compared to last year’s pass rate of 98.2%.

Of those who passed,  85% achieved entry to degree study and 12% qualified for entry to diploma study. 1.5% achieved entry for study at the Higher Certificate level.

The results of the 2013 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination are expected to be announced on 7 January 2014.
