Makana Municipality press release
WATER SITUATION AROUND MAKANA MUNICIPALITY

Waainek Water Scheme

Dam levels: ALL our dams are 100% full i.e Settlers Dam and Howiesonspoort Dams (overflowing to Settlers Dam).

1. Grahamstown Setttlers Dam – The plant is running with two pumps pumping (one pump on standby) but we are not pumping because Howiesonspoort Dam has enough water.
2. Howiesonspoort Dam – The plant is running with one pump (one pump on standby) but the one blew-off due to electric fault (lightning) from Saturday storm. Therefore, Grahamstown West (CBD and surroundings) are going to be faced with water shortage (low Pressure and possibly none availability of water to the High Lying Areas).

Waainek Water Treatment Works: – The treatment works is functioning well but the balancing dams are empty because we couldn’t fill them due to demand (water comes and goes to the reservoirs).

Reservoirs levels :- High reservoirs (situated in Waainek Water Treatment Works) is very low and resulting to the following areas having LOW PRESSURE and/or NO WATER- Correctional Services, Army Base, Cradock and Somerset Heights (other high Lying Areas) and Intermediate Reservoirs.

High Reservoir Empty – Supplying (Correctional Services, Army Base, Cradock and Somerset Heights, Industrial Area, High Lying Areas) and Intermediate Reservoir
Intermediate Reservoir – 60% Water Supply (Rhodes university and other parts of the CBD)
Low Reservoir – 80% Water Supply (most of Grahamstown)

WHAT ARE WE DOING and/or GOING TO DO TO MINIMISE THE WATER SHORTAGE?

1. We are going to switch off the ONLY RUNNING pump/motor system at Howiesonspoort Dam as to minimize possible overloading and do continuous maintenance.
2. Close (Throttling of valves as to build water levels at the HIGH RESERVOIR) the water supply during the following times:-
• Daily between 09H00 – 15H00
• Night between 22H00- 05H00
James Kleinhans Water Scheme

Dam Levels:Glen Melville Dam is functioning well and jamesKleinhans balancing is also in full capacity.

James Kleinhans Water treatment Works – The treatment works is functioning well with NO STANDBY PUMP (the pump seized and went for repairs)

Reservoir Levels -Bothas Hill Reservoir feeds the following areas;
• Extension 6 & 7 – 90% water supply
• Mayfield Housing Project – 70% water supply
• Joza Areas – No continuous water supply
• Mayfield Reservoir – 80% full capacity
• Tantyi Reservoir – 100% full capacity

WHAT ARE WE DOING and/or GONG TO DO TO MINIMISE THE WATER SHORTAGE

– We are going to switch off the ONLY RUNNING pump/motor system at James Kleinhans Water Treatment Works as to minimize possible overloading and do continuous maintenance.
– Close (Throttling of valves as to build water levels at the HIGH RESERVOIR) the water supply during the following times:-
o Daily between 09H00 – 15H00
o Night between 22H00- 05H00

We are also challenged by the shortage of water to fill the newly built reservoir at bothaas Hill due to water demand and tht is going to cause the issuing of penalties by the contractor. Therefore, we are going to continuously monitor the water levels on the reservoir and share the same quantity of water by filling the new reservoir.

Should there be any further information required in this regard please do not hesitate to call Mr Myalato at (046) 603 6163 or 072 230 0683

Yours faithfully
