Kingswood College teams dominated at the Makana and District Squash leagues prize-giving ceremony held on Thursday 7 November.

This year they won four of the five leagues and Ian Knott-Craig, master in charge of squash at Kingswood, received the Contribution to Squash Award Kingswood's first team topped the first-league logs for a second consecutive year and remain unbeaten in this time. Knott-Craig said out of their 18 matches played this year, the Kingswood firsts won 200 games, conceding only 16.

Throughout the year they played 35 school matches, losing only five. All four players on the first team have represented the Eastern Province, with Daine Kruger being selected for the South African U16 squad that will tour the USA and Canada in December. The Kingswood firsts are the top squash-playing school team in the Eastern Province.

Kingswood's second team also remained unbeaten this season, taking the top spot in the second league. The school's thirds won the third league and the Kingswood Junior firsts won the fifth league. The DSG firsts won the fourth league. Other top honours went to Rhodes student Stefan Euijen (part of the St Andrew's College team) who was named the Player of the Year. Mike Mathison won the Sportsmanship Award. See top three league winners in Know the Score on page 29.

Teams from Kenton, Port Alfred, Grahamstown, Seven Fountains, Salem and Fort Beaufort compete in the five Makana and District Squash leagues.

Leagues 1, 2 and 3 are for adult players with some school teams playing.

Leagues 4 and 5 are schools-only leagues. Leagues 1, 2, 4 and 5 play two rounds each throughout the year with teams playing home and away games.

According to Gavin Fraser, chairperson of the Makana and District Squash Union, league 3 teams only play one round as there are too many teams to play two rounds.

At the end of the first round, the top six teams in league 3 play a second round of matches. Final 2013 league matches took place at the end of October, with a Spring Doubles competition.

Brendan Wilhelmi and Gavin Fraser were the winners of this year's doubles competition.
