Residents this week flooded Makana mayor Zamuxolo Peter with questions about service-delivery – but the main concern was the housing backlog.

Although 1 000 units are currently being built at the Mayfield Phase 2 housing project, residents were concerned about discrepancies in the housing beneficiary lists.

The mayor took his road show to five wards this week, as part of a public participation process he undertakes every financial year. The wards visited were 1, 2, 8, 9 and 13.

Addressing residents of Ward 1 and 2 at Noluthando Hall on Monday 11 November, he said that following the corruption in the beneficiary nomination process, he would be monitoring the process for the next three months.

"Yes, in the first 100 [allocations]there were mistakes, but in the next batch to be handed over, we will make sure it doesn't happen again," said Peter.

Women form Ward 2, mostly elderly people, complained they had been on lists for years, but had waited in vain for houses. "I am living in one room with my children and grandchildren who are also giving birth to their own children… I don't understand why it takes so long to search if I qualify for a house," said one resident.

"How do I know now if I will get a house?", Pinkie Bikitsha asked the mayor.

Joza residents were also concerned about crime in their area.

"We need street lights because a lot of people are being robbed here, even during the day," said councillor Nomathamsanqa Meti of Ward 2.

Earlier that Monday the Mayor spoke to residents of Ward 8, 9, and 13, at Luvuyo hall in Vukani.

Issues raised in this meeting were new houses at KwaNdancama, the renovation of houses affected by the 2008 tornado and also the tarred road in Vukani location.

The Mayor will continue with his public participation meetings next week in the remaining wards.
