City Pirates Football Club are promised a hearty R12 000 purse for being crowned the Makana Local Football Association (LFA) Easter Tournament champions on Saturday 2 November.

City Pirates Football Club are promised a hearty R12 000 purse for being crowned the Makana Local Football Association (LFA) Easter Tournament champions on Saturday 2 November.

The tournament was finally concluded 217 days after its starting date.

Makana LFA chairperson, Ayanda Kota, said the delays had been caused by a number of factors including the registration of players, and poor weather conditions.

Saturday's final was the third attempt at holding the final. The previous two attempts ended prematurely due to various incidents.
In Saturday's final, Pirates beat Cameroon football club 3-0, with Athulele Ncakhwe scoring the first goal.

The score remained 1-0 at the half-time break, before Pirates scored a further two more goals to win 3-0. Malalakhe Ntsendwa and Unathi Mantolo added to the winning score.
Pirates coach Thobela Baba said his side had played a great match. They'd stuck to the game plan, which was to attack with the wings. Baba said the match had gone off without incident and was well refereed.

Although the finals were concluded last weekend, Maru and Love and Peace are still to fight for third and fourth place, on a date to be confirmed.

City Pirates and Maru are both part of the South African Football Association's Cacadu regional league, while Cameroon and Love and Peace play in the Makana LFA premier league.

Kota said the winning City Pirates would take home R12 000. Cameroon would win R8 000 for their second spot. Third place would take R5 000 and fourth R3 000.

Kota said every other participating club will receive cash, but the amounts are still to be confirmed by the LFA committee.

Kota said while the Easter tournament is an annual event, the LFA also plans to host a Mayoral soccer tournament.

This event, if the LFA's proposal is accepted, will be played in between soccer seasons.

Meanwhile, the 2013/2014 Makana LFA season is scheduled to start on 16 November, with matches played on both fields at JD Dlepu Stadium.

Rhodes University Sports Administration have been brought on board.

Mandla Gagayi, head of sport at Rhodes Sports admin, said their role would be to help set up proper structures for the running of an effective league.

He said they would train administrators, match officials and coaches.

“We will also set up finance procedures that promote accountability, and assist the association in sourcing funds from potential sponsors.”
