After an exasperating three-year wait, Joza residents may soon get free access to the internet and other computer-based services at the Duna Library.
This week librarian Malwande Nortjie said he was hopeful that the six computer workstations delivered to the library over three years ago by Connect with Cacadu will soon be available to the general public.
Connect With Cacadu is a Port Elizabeth-based government agency entrusted with delivering information technology to over 50 libraries in the district.
Due to ongoing connectivity problems at Duna Library, the Connect with Cacadu computers weren't even plugged in until earlier this year.
Over the past few months though, the computers were fired up, loaded with software and finally connected to a new wireless internet connection on Wednesday 23 October.
However, library users are not yet able to access these workstations because there are still a few technical glitches related to managing the workstations. Technicians hope that these will soon be smoothed over.
Once up and running the Connect With Cacadu service will include:
. free internet and email access
. information on government services in the district
. advice on health matters
. Edu-assist school curriculum-based activities
. computer tutorials – mouse, keyboard and typing
. a suggestion box which allows users to communicate with the design team to improve or change the system
. adult assist – life skills, career categories, advice on starting a business and tips for job readiness
. templates to assist with drafting CVs, faxes, invoices, interest calculation etc
. online counselling and information on topics like parenting
. access to audiobooks provided by the Grahamstown Friends of the Library.
Connect with Cacadu workstations are already available at the Hill Street and Fingo Village libraries.
