The Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs held an Indaba aimed at helping improve performance and oversight in municipalities around the Eastern Cape.
The Local Government Indaba was held in East London this week. Eastern Cape Local Government and Traditional Affairs MEC Mlibo Qoboshiyane said they called the Indaba to critically examine how best to improve the functionality of municipalities in the province for the benefit of the communities they serve.
"While some municipalities have made strides to improve governance, service delivery, performance monitoring and reporting it is undeniable that others are struggling to achieve the desired level of performance," he said. "This is despite the fact that necessary legislation, structures and systems required to enable municipalities to perform at an optimal level are all in place."
"Though municipalities have experienced challenges, we have called this meeting to address all these challenges so that municipalities will focus on service delivery and meeting the needs of our people."
Makana Mayor Zamuxolo Peter, Municipal Manager Dr Pravine Naidoo and Speaker Rachel Madinda-Isaac attended the Indaba on behalf of the municipality.
The three-day Indaba started on Wednesday and ends today.
