As part of an education initiative hosted at Rhodes University recently Sandwatch Foundation Director Dr Gillian Cambers gave a presentation on the organisation's use of citizen science to guide environmental action.

Sandwatch, a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) volunteer network, uses a method built on sound science practices like consistent monitoring of environmental factors, analysing data, sharing information and then using the information gathered to inform further action.

This approach is based on voluntary community participation, and highlights the difference civic contributions can make to sustainable environmental projects.

Cambers' lecture on Thursday 10 October was part of a four-day series of events, funded by Unesco, aimed at encouraging environmental sustainability.
