Members of the public are invited to a screening of short films made by school pupils and Rhodes students on the issues affecting young people and their education in Grahamstown on Thursday 10 October at 3pm at the Rhodes Theatre.
The programme, called Indlela Yethu – Our Road, consists of 22 short films. Each is a collaboration between third-year TV students and grade 10- 12 school learners from Grahamstown township high schools.
This year the films focus on their struggles and challenges around education and their road to the future. Each piece is made by a student and a learner together as classic pieces of participatory journalism in which diverse voices that are not normally heard are amplified to open discussion of the issues.
The films are all powerful personal stories told in visually engaging ways.
The project is collaboration between third year TV students in the School of Journalism and Media Studies at Rhodes University and youth of the Upstart Youth Development Project to focus their problems to the wider public sphere.
