"The biggest puff adder I ever saw" was how Grahamstown man George Oerson described the snake he rescued from a suburban street this week.

Oerson, a painter working at Cradock Heights, found the snake in Jacobus Uys Way, Hill 60, on Thursday, 26 September.

He said the lighter markings on its head meant it was a female. Oerson says that since childhood he would go into the bush to observe snakes and learn how to handle them.

He released this snake into the safety of the surrounding bush.
