A talented Graeme College rugby player was killed in an accident last Saturday 21 September after his car plunged into a small Port Alfred harbour.
The 19-year-old was the son of prominent Grahamstown advocate Charles Stamper.
Siweze Stamper was driving back to Grahamstown with two friends when he lost control of his car in Pascoe Crescent, said police spokesperson lieutenant Luvuyo Mjekula.
Sinokhanyo Jonas, 19 and Vuyolwethu Gwente, 20, escaped unharmed.
"It is alleged that the vehicle had been travelling in the southerly direction at about 8.15pm when the accident took place," Mjekula said.
Officers, including divers from the SAPS, National Sea Rescue Institute, Ndlambe Municipality and local traffic department rushed to the scene. Mjekula said they helped to retrieve Stamper's body, while a local towing company pulled the car from the water.
Mjekula said the cause of the accident is not known at this stage and a post-mortem will determine whether the driver died from impact or whether he drowned. Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
