An internal inquiry is underway investigating local police officers who may have flouted police procedures.
This comes after an elderly Extension 8 man was killed in a car accident before he could report an assault case. Police officers allegedly advised him to report it once he was discharged from hospital.
Extension 8 resident Velebhayi Zuzani was allegedly assaulted on the head by a man that he knew on 27 August.
Zuzani suffered serious injuries to his head and tried to report the matter to local police.
Police officers allegedly told him to report the case after he was discharged from hospital, but the nature of the 61-year-old man's injuries meant he had to be transferred to a Port Elizabeth hospital. The injuries to his head apparently affected his eyesight.
On 30 August Zuzani managed to leave the hospital. He was hit by an oncoming police vehicle on the freeway near the hospital and died.
Port Elizabeth police spokesperson Warrant Officer Alwin Labans was unable to comment on the matter at the time of going to press.
Meanwhile Zuzani's attacker is still roaming the streets.
Responding to questions about the incident, Grahamstown Station Commander Brigadier Morgan Govender said the matter has been brought to the attention of management.
He confirmed that an internal inquiry was being conducted to determine who the responsible members were, and to what extent police procedures may have been flouted.
"Those responsible will be dealt with accordingly," Govender said.
A senior police officer would be assigned to the case, he assured, "to interview witnesses of the deceased victim and obtain statements and formulate the necessary charge".
