Kingswood College took the title of champions of the Environmental Science School Quiz for the fifth year running. They have been beaten only once, by Victoria Girls High School, in 2008.
Kingswood College took the title of champions of the Environmental Science School Quiz for the fifth year running. They have been beaten only once, by Victoria Girls High School, in 2008.
The quiz took place on Wednesday 18 September at Rhodes University's Barratt Lecture Theatre and comprised six rounds of questions, both challenging and entertaining.
The annual event pits local high schools against each other, testing their knowledge in various categories, ranging from geography and the environment to culture and heritage. In between testing the competing teams, audience members were challenged to questions that earned them spot prizes.
After much discussion, deliberation and heads bowed together as each team settled on the correct answers, the winners were announced. In fourth and third place respectively were Mary Waters High and St Andrew’s College, who each received a sum of R1 000 for their schools.
The runner-up, Victoria Girls’ High School received R2 000 and the winning team of Celeste du Toit, Meghan Timm, Bhavik Daya and Tim Plasket were awarded R5 000. The prize money was a contribution from environmental consultants, Coastal and Environmental Services. In addition, Ntsika Secondary School won board game, EnviroWiz, in a lucky draw.
Hosted by the Environmental Science honours class at Rhodes University, the event drew a crowd of parents, teachers and peers in support of the six schools. Through the use of humour, such as ‘the plastic bag’ being a multiple choice answer to the question, “What is our national flower?”, the quiz was able to highlight serious environmental issues while also encouraging an interest in the environment among both participants and audience members.
