Oom Schalk Lourens, Herman Charles Bosman’s favourite uncle, returns to the Eastern Cape in the September holidays for a one-night stand in Bathurst.
Following in the footsteps of Percy Sieff and Patrick Mynhardt, well-known Cape Town actor David Muller brings Herman Charles Bosman’s inimitable character, Oom Schalk, back to life.
In five highly entertaining tales – short and tall – Muller reincarnates the old storyteller with pathos, mampoer, sexual tension and humour.
This single-handed comedy directed by theatre doyen Celia Musikanth, has recently entertained and delighted audiences from Maun in Botswana to the Arts Theatre in East London.
Directly from a short season at the Masque Theatre in Cape Town, where it received rave reviews and standing ovations, the show was also the highlight at the Biekie Bosman Festival in Groot Marico.
It enjoyed a good run at this year’s National Arts Festival too.
“Patrick Mynhardt did much to keep Bosman’s work alive,” said Muller, “as he said: ‘I made Bosman famous and Bosman made me rich.’ Now it’s my turn to keep the light burning.”
Bosman is after all one of the best short-story writers South Africa has produced and Oom Schalk, from the heart is a vehicle which will surely keep his literary flag flying.
