On Tuesday 10 September the Christians @ Rhodes group, a conglomeration of all Christian denominations at Rhodes University, offered a different kind of service to raise funds.

Good times, good food and good service – all for a good cause.

Shadowing waiters and waitresses at the Redwood Spur, members helped take orders, serve food and drinks, and welcome customers into the restaurant.

All the while the students informed restaurant patrons about their cause, and raised awareness about the mission week taking place on campus from 16 to 21 September.

Christians @ Rhodes struck up a deal with Redwood Spur owner Wessel Benson that 10% of everything sold during the shift would be donated to the society.

Business ran smoothly as usual as the students were a great help to the waiters and waitresses. Many customers appeared happy to find out their meal was contributing to a good cause.

The group managed to raise R1 600, which Benson rounded up to R2 000.

"The evening went very well, all I can say is that more clubs and societies should do the same thing if they want help in raising funds for themselves," Benson said.

The money went to bringing speakers from all over the country to Rhodes for the mission week, which included a worship evening, combined service and a dinner.
