On Friday 20 September the young art and poetry winners of the Dr Davies Optometrists Inc. ‘Celebrating the joy of seeing’ competition will be announced.

The competition calls upon students and scholars alike to consider the gift of their own sight and inspires them to examine their personal stories or ideas, interpreting these through art and prose.

Poets Harry Owen and Brother John Forbis, and artists Julia Skeen and Jackie Griffith-Jones selected the winners of the two competitions.

The competition is sponsored by Dr Davies Optometrists in support of Eye Care Awareness Month from 23 September to 20 October.

The art will be on display to the public from Monday, and all are welcome to view it upstairs at Dr Davies Optometrists on Bathurst Street.

This year’s Eye Care Awareness Month message is ‘Universal eye health: Get your eyes tested’. SA Retina week leads us into this by focusing public attention on how retinal diseases such as Retinitis Pigmentosa and Macular Degeneration quietly steal our vision until we are left completely in the dark.

With this in mind, from Monday 20 to Friday 27 September you may have a free colour photograph taken of your retinas. Please call Dr Davies Optometrists at 046 622 6205 for an appointment.

If you have not had your eyes examined in the last two years, the optometrist says you should make it a priority to do so during this month.

Treasure and take care of your eyes so that you too can “celebrate the joy of seeing”.
