The athletics season took off from the starting blocks this week, with the Graeme College sports day and a girls' triangular.

Things heat up this weekend with the Sammy Gunn (U14), SF Edward (U16) and Hirsch (Open) Shield events being hosted by Selborne College in East London.

St Andrew's, who hosted last year's Hirsch Shield finished second to Queen's College. St Andrew's took third place in the Sammy Ginn event, while Kingswood took third in the SF Edward Shield.

Graeme College will also send a team to compete in the prestigious schools athletics meet.

They will be looking to the likes of Abongile Hashe for a medal finish in the Hirsch Shield, after he broke the 19-year-old high jump record at the schools sports day on Monday. Hashe jumped 1.91m – above his own body height.

Two other school records were set at Graeme's sports day, helped by the cool, dry weather conditions.

Joseph Chungag Anye set a new U14 900m walking record with a time of 4 minutes 45.68 seconds. Brendan Gouws set a new U13 javelin record with a throw of 30.37m.

Khonzisizwe Somandi won the Victor Ludorum trophy.

Diocesan School for Girls won the Girls' Inter-Schools Triangular Athletics meet hosted at Kingswood College on Wednesday. No new records were set on the day.

DSG posted 249 points, Kingswood finished second with 217 points and Victoria Girls' High School a close third with 216 points.

Girls competed in the U14, U16 and Open age groups. Each school couldn enter up to two pupils per event, with every participant earning points for her school.

The Anne Bandey Shield was awarded to DSG.

A boys' quadrangular athletics meet takes place on 18 September at Kingswood, while Kingswood sport's day takes place on 28 September. DSG and St Andrew's will hold their athletics day on 17 October on St Andrew's Lower Field.
