St Andrew’s College boarders who played in the school’s Graham House courtyard over the years returned last weekend to celebrate their old home’s 50th anniversary.
On 6 and 7 September 2013 a group of Graham House Old Boys enjoyed a cocktail party on the Friday evening and a garden party on the Saturday afternoon. They spoke endearingly of their memories of time spent in the boarding house.
St Andrew’s College pupils and staff entertained the guests with music and choral performances. Current Graham House boys were presented with commemorative ties and blazer pins.
Before the boarding house was part of the college in the late 1800s, pupils of the Mullins Institution lived and worked here, developing many of the building’s features that survive today.
In 1963, Graham House became the sixth boarding house at St Andrew’s after it had served as a day-boy House.
Roger Clark, father of former headmaster, Antony Clark, was appointed as the first housemaster. Neil Street was elected as the first head of house.
In 1963 Littlewoods, the home of Judge E F van der Riet, became the new-boy house of Graham House.
In 1997, the name was changed to Van der Riet Lodge in honour of its benefactor.
