The trust governing Grahamstown's Eluxolweni Children's Shelter was nominated Social Champion in the Charities Sector by the National Lotteries Board (NLB).
The annual NLB Chairperson’s Stakeholder Engagement Indaba and Awards, held in Johannesburg recently, take into account all stakeholders in South Africa's nine provinces.
This was the second Stakeholders Indaba of its kind and Eluxolweni’s first award.
Aiming to strengthen relationships between the NLB and the organisations it funds, the Board recognises beneficiaries that excel in corporate governance.
Beneficiaries were judged in two categories: compliance and governance.
In the compliance category, judges looked at the nominees' treatment of grant agreements. This included organisations' efficiency with administration and the timeous submission of reports.
In the governance category, judges looked at both non-profit companies and non-profit organisations and their transformation with regards to composition of their boards, gender equality, racial diversity and representation of the disabled in the organisation.
Good governance also included clean audit reports and the compliant presentation of annual financial statements.
"We are looking forward to the next NLB Stakeholder Engagement Indaba and Awards Event at which we will reflect on both compliance and Governance issues," said Eluxolweni Charitable Trust manager David Claassen. "We want to encourage other NGOs locally and provincially to participate and do even better at the next Awards Evening."
