Handwritten notices advertising a meeting to lament the decline of the ANC and posted outside the city hall last week were torn down within minutes.
The three notices were appealing to those who, having fought for people's freedom, felt let down by the organisation. Their message was that the ANC was going down the drain before people's eyes. The notices were removed within five minutes of being placed.
Grocott's Mail was unable to establish who had erected the notices. So was ANC sub-regional chairperson Mncedisi Boma, who was visibly annoyed.
"First these notices were hand-written and there was no logo of the organisation, and there is no meeting that can be called under the ANC's name without my knowledge. So as far as I am confirming, there will be no meeting in our offices," Boma said.
The notice said the meeting would be held in the ANC offices in Grahamstown at 4.30pm on Wednesday 11 September: "Konakele maqabane umbutho uyaphela siwubukele umoswha ngababantu abathi ziingkokheli…" read one.
Boma said even the secretary of the sub-region had no knowledge of "this so-called meeting". "It is not going to take place in our offices, so I can confirm that there will be no meeting. l will make sure that it does not happen, even if they change the venue. No individual can call a meeting under the umbrella of the ANC," Boma said.
